Welcome to the Visual Arts page.  I’m the high school art teacher, Danielle Hanna.

This year marks my 10th year of teaching art in SPS. For 4 years, I taught art at Douglas Elementary School, and for the last 6 years, I’ve been teaching 9th-12th graders at the secondary level.

It’s a joy to be teaching art in a supportive community like ours where “the arts” are reflected and intertwined in our lives.

Now that I’m able to see many of my former elementary students in my high school art classes – that is a joy, too!

Because of the high interest in art, we offer an amazing variety of art classes in our high school’s trimester calendar. It’s a challenge to be a “one person art department” but I enjoy exposing our students to many mediums, including life observation sketching, graphic design, photography, clay, and print-making.

As I also teach two alternating upper level Kendall College classes for our more advanced art students, I help students explore their “next steps” in the field of art and prepare digital portfolios to showcase their work.

I hope you’ll take the time to check out the work of our students, whether it’s in an online gallery or in person. We have so many talented students at every grade level.

Although I knew I was destined to be a teacher someday (I’m a “4th generation” teacher in my family), I’m grateful I was able to merge art and education in my professional training and later become a teacher here.

We definitely have a wonderful art community in Saugatuck and Douglas, both inside and outside of school.
