M-H School

Saugatuck Middle School is a vibrant learning community of 207 students in grades six through eight. In three short years, students grow physically, socially and intellectually in preparation for a successful transition to Saugatuck High School. At SMS the focus is on teamwork, respect for self and others, and giving your personal best effort.

Our small class sizes, combined with the experience of our middle school staff and our commitment to providing an individualized education, make Saugatuck Middle School an ideal place for students to thrive academically. Our language arts, social studies, science, and math classes are broken down into several units of study that are presented to students in ways that allow for individual learning style preferences.

Saugatuck Middle School offers a continuum of academic services and support for students. SMS teachers have all been trained to use differentiated instruction techniques in the classroom to reach all students at their academic level and take them to the next level of learning. Early interventions and challenges are provided for qualifying students through our special education services, reading and math RtI programs, small group instruction, early Explore/ACT testing through the Midwest Academic Talent Search, PATH program for academically talented students through Hope College, and academic planning/enrichment assistance provided by our Curriculum and G/T Coordinator.

In addition to rigorous core classes, students have the opportunity to investigate a wide range of topics and subjects through our exploratory program. Classes in Spanish, art, band, physical education, music, industrial art, leadership, business applications, and multimedia technology are offered to students on a rotating basis.

Outside of the classroom, Saugatuck Middle School students have a wide range of choices for enrichment opportunities. Academic clubs like quiz bowl, book discussion groups, Destination Imagination, and Youth in Government allow students the opportunity to collaborate with others who have similar academic interests. The SMS student council gives student leaders the opportunity to grow their leadership skills and provide a service to the SMS student body. School sports including track, cross country, football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer, give young athletes opportunities to be part of competitive teams. Throughout the year, students can also join in Community Recreation sports, activities, and classes including ski club, baseball, softball, sailing, and Girls on Track.
